Finally, a reason to bring your smartphone to the dinner table.

Finally, a reason to bring your smartphone to the dinner table.

Have you ever considered these contradictions…

  1. We all know that kids die of hunger every day,
    • … but they are too far away to serve them our daily meals.
  2. We all want to help,
    • … but it is not obvious to whom, where, and when to give our money or our helping hands.
  3. We all count on our governments and many agencies to relieve hunger,
    • … but we don´t know whether food arrives or whether it is enough.
  4. We all keep our smartphone on the dinner table,
    • … but—usually—don't have a good reason to do so.

Sebastian Stricker and Bernhard Kowatsch, my former BCG colleagues, have not only considered these contradictions but have taken action in their current roles working for the World Food Programme (WFP). Combining BCG's "let's challenge" attitude with the WFP's knowledge of—and access to—those who need help, they assembled a team within an “innovation accelerator” environment at WFP.

Two years later (from idea to launch), they've created the world's first app built to fight global hunger. It's called ShareTheMeal, and it goes live globally today.

It only costs 50 cents to feed one child for one full day; with two taps on your smartphone, you can make that small donation to WFP and "share your meal" with a child in need. This overview explains more.

I will use my phone at the dinner table with pride tonight—thank you Sebastian and Bernhard!

Phaps Heino and BCG guys, you might persuade Marriott & Starwood to ' banner this excellent 'ShareTheMeal' idea on their bkfst menu's or similar. At 1.1 mio rooms and 70% occupancy with a full turnover of the same every 3 days, they alone with 100% participation from guests, would sort this. And, bring a whole new meaning to the expression 'cover charge'; everything would be so much more palatable.

Whilst I don't think a lot of the contradictions...it's a great idea :)

What a beautiful idea!
